Ingredients

  • 8 slices white sandwich bread
  • 8 slices American or cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter softened

Instructions

  • Lay each slice of bread flat on a cutting board. Using a rolling pin, gently roll each slice to flatten it.
  • Trim off the crusts from each slice for easier rolling and to ensure even cooking.
  • Place one slice of cheese on each flattened slice of bread. Fold cheese to fit if necessary.
  • Starting from one end, tightly roll up the bread and cheese into a log. Press gently at the seam to seal.
  • Spread a small amount of softened butter on the outside of each roll up, covering all sides.
  • Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat.
  • Place the roll ups seam side down in the skillet. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, turning as needed until all sides are browned and cheese is melted.
  • Remove from skillet and serve warm. Delicious on their own or with tomato soup or dipping sauce.
